CONTEST!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are the half-time show at the Super Bowl (Packers v. Patriots, FYI). Guess what songs they will play and win a Federalcheese t-shirt. I'm guessing a medley involving:

American Girl
I Won't Back Down
Runnin' Down A Dream
Mary Jane's Last Dance

Very nice prediction Willie, but I think he has a new album coming out. I will go with American Girl, Running Down a Dream, New Song that No One but fans of Petty will want to hear, Won't Back Down and Free Fallin'. I wear XL.

Wuj,
Did you see the Xavier McDaniel episode of Pros vs. Joes?

P.S.
Pros vs. Joes is the most compelling show on tv.

P.P.S.
Tom Petty will only play Cat Power covers.

Justin,

Your dream of Michael Degnan and his downs syndrome cellmates reminded me of a dream I had last week in which Margaret explained that a recent trip to the doctor's office had revealed that she has downs syndrome. We both broke into tears in the dream and then I woke up startled and afraid.

Oh no way does Petty play Last Dance with Mary Jane at the Super Bowl. Insert Free Fallin there. And he leads with Won't Back Down.

Did I ever tell you about the time my friend Jody and I saw Mike Campbell and the Dirty Nobs, which is the Heartbreakers minus Tom Petty, at SLO Brew? It was like ten bucks, there were maybe 30 people there, and it absolutely fucking rocked.

Tom Petty plays by his own rules, man! I was thinking that non-Petty fans would recognize those opening licks to Mary Jane, seems like they would do something with that. I would have to say that Tom Petty was the best pure rock show I have ever attended. I once dreamed that I had spent the years following college wandering through the world with no aim or purpose. Oh wait.

Housman,

About your dream: That is odd. Apparently the Downsies have violently invaded the zeitgeist.

What songs do the Heartbreakers play without Tom Petty? Do they still play the same songs? Original compositions? "Rock Standards" covers?

They played I think maybe one or two songs that I remembered, but that might be inaccurate. I do remember however thinking that they were having the time of their lives up there on stage.

Tom Petty To Play Some New Stuff He's Been Working On At Super Bowl

PHOENIX—Veteran rocker Tom Petty, known for such classic hits as "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "The Waiting," and "Refugee," announced Monday that he will be using the Super Bowl XLII Halftime Show as a forum to "test out" some new songs that he's been working really hard on lately. "There's this one cool one that I'm pretty excited about that's called, like, 'Down And Out,' because it has this really down-and-out-like 'feel' to it—it doesn't have a chorus yet, but I think we're gonna open with that," Petty said, describing the song as "like 'Free Fallin',' but weirder." "After that, we'll probably do two different versions of 'Rock Rock Rock (Yeah!)' and see which one the crowd likes better. Then I have this guitar riff which technically doesn't have a song to go with it but it sounds awesome, and then [keyboardist] Benmont [Tench] wrote a song about the Super Bowl that I said I'd let him play." Petty has told the 65,000 fans in attendance and the estimated 95 million TV viewers that any feedback, positive or negative, would be appreciated.

Pros vs. Joes is the best.

Favorite moment was some dude from Michigan or wherever (somewhere they say 'aboot') who kept running his mouth at Claude Lemieux. Needless to say the guy ended up eating Easton and getting cross-checked into the boards.

Note: Claude was rated a 68 in NHL 94. My favorite weapon vs. Cooley was Mike Gartner (wicked shot and rocket-like speed) who was rated an 85 (same as Messier!)
